Parent Guidelines

Pirate LC is with some of the most supportive parents in the country.  The support of our parents is part of the reasons Pirate LC has become so successful.  Following the guidelines when attending events with your player will be even more helpful

Keep the Sideline Comments Positive

Negative comments of any kind have a negative impact on the team.  Criticizing referees does not help and often hurts by turning their bias against us-your player, our team and our program.  If you want officiating to be more favorable to us, cheer the good calls and say nothing about the bad calls.  Criticizing the coaching saps energy from our team and presents a negative image about our club to the lacrosse community.  The best way to address coaching issue is for your player to speak the coach.  If you feel you must say something about the coaching – (24 hour rule) and find a time to talk privately.

Negative comments on the sidelines of a game can hurt your players chances of playing in college.  Since college coaches and their assistants are all around you at tournaments, they do not want to bring any negativity into their programs.

Respect the Referees

Let the Pirate LC coaches handle the referees.  At Pirate LC we tell our coaches to expect bad calls and to respectfully make your case and then move on.  We want our parents to be on the same page as our coaches on this one.  The game of lacrosse like all sports is emotional and the referees have a difficult job.  Increasing the emotion and pressure on the referee will not make he/she make better calls.  Referees are more likely to reverse a call if they feel respected and not threatened.  This is no different than how any of us would respond in a similar situation.

Respect the Coaches

Our coaches have vast experience both playing the game at a high level and coaching at a high level.  Most of our coaches are coaching year round and that gives them the opportunity to experience many situations.  Also, our coaches talk to each other about the game and situations to make them better coaches.   Your public respect helps build a better program for players.  Your private respect with your children helps them be more successful with the players

Do Not Coach Your Player or Other Players from the Sideline

Players need to focus on one side of the field for coaching.  Even good coaching from parents is confusing.  Also, you may not know what has been told to players.  For example, we often hear “double the ball” from parents when our team is man up and the other team has the ball.  In many instances, this is exactly the wrong thing to do.  Our coaches are teaching players many strategies that are employed at the upper levels of the game.  If you have a question about a particular play or strategy, ask one of the coaches after the game.

Obey Rules of the Venue we Attend

Through your support, Pirate LC participates in tournaments within driving distance.  Events, practice areas, etc. all of rules governing their facilities and events.  Please make sure to obey those rules that Pirate LC is always viewed in a positive light and is always welcomed back.
